18th Galway Film Fleadh offers rich pickings for film lovers18th Galway Film Fleadh offers rich pickings for film loversThe programme for the 18th Galway Film Fleadh was announced in Galway on Monday, 26th of June and promises to cover a lot of ground with a heady mix of controversial documentaries, high profile premieres and heavy hitting stars attending throughout the week of July 11th 16th. This year's Fleadh will open on Tuesday July 11th with a debut feature called Shut Up and Shoot Me by Anglo - Czech writer/director Steen Agro. A combination of bizarre road movie and surreal black comedy, this movie starring Andy Nyman and Anna Geislerova presents a winning mix of blackmail, nymphomania and murder and guarantees a dramatic start to this year's proceedings. The 2006 programme also delivers a number of powerful documentaries, varying from Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price to the emotive The Trials of Darryl Hunt - a remarkable film that documents the aftermath of a brutal rape/murder and harrowing wrongful conviction in the American South - this documentary has been 10 years in the making and director Annie Sudberg will attend the screening. Director Ray McCormack will also be in town for the Irish Premiere of the topical A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash, this documentary examines the cataclysmic consequences of 'peak oil'. Equally, Al Gore presents his overview of climate change in a documentary that promises to break new ground in politics - An InconvenientTruth. An Italian season provides the glamorous centrepiece of this year's Fleadh programme and both classical and contemporary Italian Cinema will be showcased in all their glory over the course of the week. Fellini's Amarcord and Visconti's The Leopard will be among the past titles from Italy's rich history, while modern day masterpieces such as Saimir and Quo Vadis Baby are rich rewards for those with a more contemporary leaning. This year the Fleadh will also feature an Out On Film strand which showcases films of particular interest to the Gay community C.R.A.Z.Y., Time to Leave and the documentary, Left Lane which is a year in the life of feminist folk poet, Alix Olson (who will also attend the Fleadh). A wealth of New Irish Features will also be screened at this year's event. Middletown, starring Matthew Macfadyen, Eva Birthistle and Gerard McSorley will be screened in the Town Hall Theatre on Saturday night, July 15th at 9pm. The World Premiere of Small Engine Repair, the debut feature by director Niall Heery, is the main feature on Friday night, July 14th.
