Eyre Square re-opens today

Eyre Square re-opens today

Eyre Square re-opens to the public today, 13 April 2006, with the removal of the barriers around the new state of the art city centre plaza.

SIAC Construction Ltd has confirmed that all major works on the Square will be completed by the end of the week, enabling them to remove the barriers to the new central plaza.

Welcoming the announcement, the Mayor of Galway City, Cllr. Brian Walsh, claimed that the completion of works on Eyre Square would bring a major positive boost to Galway City as the summer season approaches.

"Now that the square is finished," said Mayor Walsh, "Galway City Centre will have the finest city centre civic space in the country. The project has had some trying times but it is clear to see that the finished product stands out as a wonderful first impression of the city for all visitors, and the real heart piece of Galway City."

Mayor Walsh paid tribute to everyone involved in bringing the project to a fruitful completion. "Great praise must go to the City Manager and his staff and SIAC Construction Ltd for bringing the project to a satisfactory conclusion. There will be a day of festivities on the 27th May to officially launch the square and this will be a great opportunity for Galway to showcase the city at a national level."

City Manager, Mr. Joe MacGrath, has also welcomed the announcement of the completion of works on the square and has commended all involved for their dedication to the project over the past two years.

"Our own staff and SIAC Construction Ltd have worked tirelessly to get the project back on track and indeed to complete the works prior to the forthcoming summer season. Galway City now has the finest city centre plaza in the country, connecting the train station at the north end of the city seamlessly with the Spanish Arch down in Quay Street," said Mr. MacGrath.

The Square will be an area for pedestrians to sit out and enjoy Galway City at its most attractive," Mr. MacGrath continued, "and should bring a great deal of atmosphere and business to the central heart of the city."
