Smaointí at Kenny Gallery

A painting by Máire Creaven on exhibition in Kennys from 1 April 2005

Joe Connolly will officially launch Smaointí, an exhibition of paintings by Máire Creaven, in the Kenny Gallery this Friday the 1st of April at 6pm. Máire is a native of Spiddal, Co. Galway. She was educated in Spiddal, Tralee and Dublin and was awarded a scholarship to the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. There she studied under Sean Keating, Maurice McGonigal, John Kelly and Lucy Charles. They encouraged her to place a heavy emphasis on traditional values in her work especially draughtsmanship.

Her choice of subject matter is eclectic still-lifes, deserted cottages, warm interiors, wild flowers, portraits, dock studies, musician, the village of Menlo. She delights in the everyday Sa Bhaile being a perfect example.

She is versatile in that she works in a variety of media oils, watercolours, pastels, acrylics, pen and ink drawings. She also varies her style from soft delicate finely drawn portraits to heavily textured strongly coloured oil paintings. She is courageous, loves to experiment and have a go. This collage of images is of people and places that are important to her. They are keenly observed studies, intimate portraits, which exude a sense of peace and calm.

Máire lives in a beautiful thatched house in Menlo. She has six children, many of who are expressing themselves artistically, in art, design and music. Her daughter Sarah Ann was the recent winner of a student fashion award from her college, Central St Martins, London and her designs went on display in Harrodss window.
