The fact that Galway city is virtually awash with buildings and areas of interest stems from its rich cultural and historical heritage which goes right back to early Christian times. Many of the ancient buildings and monuments have been well preserved and are an integral part of day to day life in the city. Aside from these, Galway has a fascinating literary and cultural heritage, which is mainly derived from the huge number of literary and artistic greats that the city has produced. This huge emphasis on culture has continued to this day and there are many contemporary artistic developments that are as important as the historical legacies.
