Solicitors/ Attorneys
University College Galway has one of the few internationally recognised law departments in Ireland and as a result most of the legal representation available here is home grown. Solicitors and Barristers are the integral members of the Irish judicial system and you should have absolutely no difficulty locating one if the need should arise.
Ireland is a country blessed with large numbers of lawyers. There's something like one legal eagle to represent every 500 people so you don't have to search very hard to find a good solicitor. Property work particularly conveyancing forms the basis of the workload in the average solicitors office.
All solicitors and barristers are professionally qualified and have attended law school after graduating from university. Solicitors after gaining their degree attend law school but the primary part of their training is received through apprenticeship to a lawyer of at least 7 years standing. This apprenticeship lasts about 2.5 years. They then sit professional exams and on passing these they receive their parchment and can practise as solicitors. Barristers in Ireland act as advocates. They represent clients in a court of law from the circuit court upwards. They also attend a professional law school and are 'devilled' to a working barrister. This is a process similar to an apprenticeship.
If you require the services of a barrister you should approach a solicitor. They hear your case and then decide if its necessary to employ a barrister. Solicitors have a right of standing in the District court so if your case is a minor misdemeanour then your solicitor may speak on your behalf.
