GMIT Marine Expert Publishes New Book On Shellfish Biology

GMIT Marine Expert Publishes New Book On Shellfish Biology

The launch has taken place at GMIT of a major new book by Dr. Elizabeth Gosling in the area of mollusc shellfish biology. The book titled "Bivalve Molluscs : Biology, Ecology and Culture" brings together information on the biology, ecology and conservation, cultivation, fishery and management of commercial bivalves and is published by Blackwell Publishing UK.

Dr. Gosling is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and has been researching the population genetics and molecular systematics of marine molluscs for nearly 25 years. She is a recognised authority on the population genetics of marine bivalves, particularly mussels. Dr. Gosling has published more than 50 scientific papers and is the editor of two books. In 1984 with Professor Noel Wilkins, NUI, Galway she co-edited "Genetics in Aquacultures". In 1992 she edited "The Mussels Mytilus" published by Elsevier Press in Holland.

To date Dr. Gosling has received both national and international research funding and has worked abroad at Duke University, North Carolina, USA, at the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, France and at the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland, Hamburg, Germany.

The Molecular Ecology Research Group under Dr. Gosling?s supervision are currently working on the genetics of both marine and freshwater mussels, and on several commercial fish species e.g. blue whiting and haddock.

Speaking at the launch Ms. Marion Coy, Director, GMIT said that Dr.Elizabeth Gosling's book would be a very important resource for biologists, ecologists, environmental scientists, fisheries scientists and personnel within the aquaculture industry. Dr.Peter Heffernan, Chief Executive of the Marine Institute, co- sponsors of the launch, said that Dr. Gosling's book was extremely comprehensive and covered all major aspects of this important class of invertebrates. "As well as being an important class of invertebrate animals biologically and ecologically, many of the bivalves such as mussels, oysters, scallops and clams are fished and cultured commercially in a multi-billion dollar worldwide industry."

Elizabeth Gosling grew up in Dublin and obtained her B.Sc and Ph.D in the Zoology Department, NUI, Galway. She currently resides in Drimmovohaun, Moycullen with her husband Prof. Jim Gosling, Director of Quality at NUI, Galway.
