'Connemarathon' heading for huge success

The Fintrax Connemara International Marathon takes place this year on March 30th. The event has grown from its humble beginnings last September with just 70 participants to become a major sporting event in the west of Ireland. The route will take participants through the picturesque Lough Inagh Valley and Leenaun, before finishing at Maam Cross in the heart of Connemara.

Entries have already topped the 650 mark and the organisers say they’ll cope with up to 800 competitors. Interest has been mounting since a well planned and sustained marketing campaign was launched in October which included Exhibition presence, Advertising and Online marketing backed by Ireland West Tourism and Gaelsaoire, which has captured the imagination of runners worldwide. Race Director Ray O’Connor says ‘this is only the tip of the Iceberg, if we can handle and move the people, then I’ll sell this race to thousands in years to come. Entries are coming in at a rate of 40 a day over the last couple of weeks which indicates that this is going to be something big and sustained’.

Main Sponsors The Fintrax Group have added strength to the marathon with the main sponsorship for the 2003 event. With head quarters at Ballinahown, Connemara, the Fintrax Group are an international financial transactions company who have developed innovative Credit Card Point of Sale Solutions and Automated Tourist Tax Refund services. With operations centres worldwide, The Fintrax Group are helping lift the profile of the marathon in many counries as well as bringing hundreds of visitors to Ireland in the off-season.

Entries for both the full marathon (26.2 miles) and the half marathon (13.1 miles) are likely to close shortly and potential participants are advised to contact www.connemarathon.com or ring 091 565154 without delay.
