Minister Dermot Ahern Announces Details of Boat Safety Seminars

galway.net , 30 Sep 2002

Dermot Ahern TD Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources today announced details of Information Seminars being held by his Department to publicise the new Passenger Boat Regulations. The Minister announced earlier this month that he is bringing forward the date of commencement of the new Regulations from 6 June 2003 to 1 January 2003.

Minister Ahern said: "Safety at sea and on water is our number one priority. I am most anxious that everyone involved in the passenger boat sector would attend these seminars so that they can learn at first hand what the new regulations entail. I would urge everyone to attend."

Details of the Seminars are as follows:

Wednesday 16th October

Galway Bay Hotel and Country Club, Oranmore, Co. Galway

7-10pm

Thursday 17th October

Lake Hotel, Killarney

7-10pm

Monday 21st October

Cedars Hotel, Rosslare

7-10pm

Wednesday 23rd October

Dublin Castle, (Coach House)

3-6pm

Thursday 24th October

Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny

7-10pm

Experts from the Department's Maritime Safety Directorate will be in attendance to answer technical and general queries regarding the new Regulations. From the 1st January next all passenger boats will be required to have a licence to operate. To qualify for a licence each boat must be surveyed by a Department Marine Surveyor and comply with the requirements of the new Regulations.

These seminars are being organised to ensure that vessel owners and operators have comprehensive information and advice to hand on what will be required under the new Regulations.

Anyone wishing to attend one of the Information Seminars should phone Catherine Murray at (01) 6199356 or email at catherine.murray@dcmnr.gov.ie.
