Delays on Galway - Dublin road expected due to defective road surface

Parts of the recently opened M4 tolled motorway connecting Kilcock and Kinnegad are to be closed for repairs following the discovery that the surface is defective in a 4km stretch of the road. The 420 million euro project was opened by the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in December last year. In the opening speech he described the route as a "high quality road". According to the NRA, the problem is due to a "bad batch" of road surface material laid during poor weather conditions.

Fatal road accident on Gort to Ennis road

Gardaí at Gort are investigating a fatal crash on the N18 Gort to Ennis road at 3pm on 24 June 2006. Three vehicles, two cars and a van, were involved in the crash near the junction of the Tulla road. The driver of one of the cars, a man in his 70's, was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger in the same car, also believed to be in her 70's, was taken to University College Hospital Galway, but is not thought to be seriously injured. Update (25 June 2006): the victim has been named as 66 year old Jeremiah Mulcahy of Parklands Drive, Commons Road, Cork.
