While most punters were queueing for pints and placing bets at the Tote, the real action was on the tracks interior, where spectators with lawn chairs and picnic baskets experienced up-close the spectacle's full drama. The seven day race meeting attracted record levels of attendance, with evening crowds transforming the atmosphere of Quay and High streets to that of a giant, open air night club.
