Friday, 25 June '04 Spanish Arch, Galway

Sixty miles removed from its intended audience, protesters congregated at the Spanish Arch in Galway on the evening of Bush's arrival into Ireland. Mr. Bush pulled the curtains for an early bed in his Dromoland Castle suite in County Clare, as protesters waved placards, folk musicians strummed guitars and leaders delivered impassioned orations. One speaker reminded the audience. "We are not anti-American, just anti war and anti Bush," a position affirmed with general applause. During Bush's brief visit, similar protests were held throughout Ireland, most notably Dublin, Cork, and Shannon.
